IRIS: Who We Are

We are on a mission to end preventable blindness.

An IRIS preventative screening for Diabetic Retinopathy is as simple and quick as taking a patient's blood pressure or stepping on a scale, and can be just as helpful to physicians in helping to detect eye disease or other disorders. The retina is a window into the body. Minute changes in the blood vessels of the retina can be early indicators of issues elsewhere.

IRIS was founded by nationally-recognized retina surgeon Sunil Gupta, M.D.,  in 2011 with a vision to save sight for millions of people through the development and deployment of screening services that enhance preventative care.

Since then, the IRIS team has developed breakthrough cloud-based services that have the potential to broadly impact the healthcare landscape in the United States and around the world.  Our team of physicians, technicians, and change management experts seek to partner with forward-thinking providers and payers alike to enhance quality outcomes and create a better healthcare system.

The IRIS board of advisors is comprised of some of the top medical and business thought-leaders in the country. Additionally, IRIS is backed by the resources of United States Retina, a nation-wide affiliation of top retina surgeons and practices. IRIS also works with Lions Eye Institute to provide screenings at events across the southern United States, and works closely with the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) to advance technologies in the healthcare space.

Founder/Chairman & Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Sunil Gupta is a subject matter expert in retina treatment and care throughout the country. As one of the nation’s most respected retina surgeons, he is pioneering innovative treatment and prevention protocol in his field. Dr. Gupta created Retina Specialty Institute to provide superior, patient-centered diagnosis and treatment for retina patients. He has served as the Chairman and Administrator since inception; growing the practice to 16 locations with 8 retina surgeons from New Orleans to Gainesville. Dr. Gupta also serves as the Chairman of the Andrews Institute Ambulatory Surgery Center responsible for the overall success of the entity.

Jason Crawford has over 15 years of experience in management and leadership. As a healthcare leader, Jason was responsible for the growth and performance of seven specialty physician practices. Prior to healthcare, Jason served as a consultant and business development director of the regional CPA firm O’Sullivan Creel. Jason graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the University of West Florida. He served 8 years in the US Army Infantry with tours in Baghdad, Bosnia, and Korea receiving the Army Commendation Medal x3 and the Purple Heart. He was a founding member and past chairman of the Pensacola Young Professionals, past Director of the Pensacola Chamber of Commerce, and past Trustee for the University of West Florida.

Jonathan Stevenson is experienced in developing and managing strategic IT initiatives for large healthcare systems. Jonathan previously served as the Director of Analytic and Data Management at Ochsner Health System, one of the largest healthcare providers in the South. Jonathan has been a speaker at both Informatica World as well as the CDA Academy. He has also been the reference of many articles on Healthcare and Data, most recently an article published by Government Health IT, titled "How Ochsner is Amazon-izing itself with big data." Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Louisiana State University in Information Systems and Decision Sciences, is the father of two curious boys and a husband to a healthcare provider.

Patrick Cresson has over 10 years of experience in Healthcare Management, Sales and Marketing.  As a healthcare leader, Patrick managed and helped grow 5 surgical specialty departments at Ochsner Health System then served as System Director of Patient Access and worked in collaboration with physician leadership to develop and grow one of the largest Clinical Integration Programs in the South.  Patrick graduated with a Master of Health Administration from the University of South Carolina where he was awarded the Foster G McGaw National Scholarship for Excellence.  Patrick is a father and a husband and is very involved in his local community serving on community boards such as American College of Healthcare Executives, The Salvation Army and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation.

Greg is responsible for the leadership and strategic directions of the Client Services Department, directly overseeing account services, new client implementation, and customer support. Greg works closely with the sales, technology, operations, and account management teams to ensure superior client service, guidance, assistance, and results. Greg has over 30 years of experience in management, operations, sales and client services.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of West Florida.  Greg is married and is the father of two boys.

Patrice Schilling is responsible for all of our project management, quality control, and standard operating processes. Her background includes over 23 years of project management and building systems within the technology industry. Most recently, Patrice was in charge of the Project Management Office for Televox, Inc., a provider of healthcare communications. She is a highly experienced manager with extensive expertise leading programs and projects in Fortune 500 companies. Patrice is well-versed and highly qualified in handling strategic planning, large scale operations, and applications development and implementation. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Spring Hill College.

Stephanie Collins

VP Payer Contracting & Relations

Stephanie Collins stands at the forefront of one of the fastest changing healthcare industry trends: that of healthcare reimbursement. She has spent the last eighteen years with two integrated delivery healthcare systems- Tampa General Healthcare and Baptist Health Care Corporation (Pensacola). While there, she strengthened the managed care contracts’ portfolios which generated income, at unprecedented
levels, to support programs to serve the community.

Possessing a keen understanding of reimbursement and value-based quality programs, introduced in the Affordable Care Act, Collins has built a reputation, among her peers, as a subject matter expert in her field. She served as the President of the Florida Hospital Association's Managed Care Professionals and served as a Board Member several years. In the industry’s leading certification test, for Managed Care Professionals, Collins scored the highest in the nation and was recognized in Baltimore for this achievement.

Having worked for Alcon Laboratories, after graduating from college, Collins has returned to the eye industry to serve as the Vice President of Payer Contracting and Relations for Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems™. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

Chris Belmont, MBA serves as a Vice President and the Chief Information Officer of MD Anderson Cancer Center.  Chris served as Ochsner Health System’s Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President since 2009 and previously as Vice President of Corporate Systems since 2006.  Chris has over 25 years healthcare experience in various IT positions including Siemens Medical Solutions, and Healthlink/IBM as Executive VP in the Central Region. Chris earned his Master of Business Administration from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA.  Chris has been a member of the LA HIMSS Board since 2006 and a member of ACHE.

Jack Frazee is the retired President/COO and Director of Sprint Corporation and the retired Chairman and CEO of Centel Corporation, which merged with Sprint in 1993.  Jack spent over 35 years in the telecommunications industry, starting his career with the Bell system in 1966 before joining Centel in 1972.

Jack is a director of Verde Realty, LLC, Cabot Microelectronics Corp, and Children’s Choice Learning Centers, LLC.  He previously served as Chairman of the Board of C-SPAN.  He is a former director of Dean Foods, EMS Technologies, Nalco Chemical Company, Midway Airlines, Harris Bancorp, PageNet, Homestead Village, Inc., and Security Capital Group, and was a public director of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE).

Paul Handel, MD is the former Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Health Care Service Corporation.  HCSC is the largest customer-owned health insurer in the United States and fourth largest overall, operating through its Blue Cross and Blue Shield® Plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.  Previously, he was vice president and chief medical officer of the Texas Division. A former member of HCSC’s Texas Affiliate Board, he has had a successful private practice in Houston.

Chad Henderson brings 18 years of experience and an entrepreneurial spirit to the IRIS team. Starting and operating his first business at the young age of 16, Chad has become passionate about developing new business opportunities. Chad is the founding principal of THG Investments, a health care focused private equity firm. Under Chad’s leadership, THG Investments has built a healthcare facility oriented real estate portfolio of over 400,000 square feet valued at $50 million as well as successfully launched multiple start up business including: Catalyst CRE as well as Lost Key Media. Chad has graduated from the College of Business at Florida State University with a B.S. in Finance.

Ronald L. Gross, MD, joined WVU as chair of the department of ophthalmology and director of the Eye Institute in April 2013.  Dr. Gross earned his undergraduate degree from Rice University and his medical degree from WVU in 1982.  After completing a residency at Baylor College of Medicine and a glaucoma fellowship at Jefferson Medical College and Wills Eye Hospital, he joined the Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as professor of ophthalmology and director of Glaucoma Services.

In addition to his educational, clinical, and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Gross has been principle investigator or collaborator on more than 80 research projects and author or co-author of 155 publications in peer-reviewed journals.  He is editor of the standard textbook, Clinical Glaucoma Management.

Among other honors, Dr. Gross received the Honor Award and Senior Achievement Award of the American Ophthalmology Society.  Former president George H.W. Bush was a patient of Dr. Gross for many years. He joins IRIS as the Medical Advisor to the Board.
